After over a decade, or two decades perhaps, Team Pilipinas finally wins one over the Asian powerhouse China, 79-74, today at the FIBA Asia Qualifiers in Tokushima, Japan. Faced with the towering heights and long limbs, the Filipinos showed the spunk they were made of, with their hustle defense, limiting the prolific Chinese scorers to measly 8 points in the last quarter. Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams, with the able support of Kerby Raymundo, placed the entire team on their shoulders as they scrambled for the loose balls and converted clutch baskets during the homestretch.
Team Pilipinas keeps its hopes towards a stint in the Olympics to be held next year in Beijing, China. On the other hand, the Chinese are automatically qualified for the quadrennial meet, for being the host of the said event. Team Pilipinas faces a formidable Jordanian squad tomorrow, 7pm (Manila Time)
