Gossip Girl, a 21st century take of the 90’s cult series, Beverly Hills 90210. GG is like Dawson’s Creek in Central Park and more… It’s a teen series and fashion show rolled into one. Perhaps it’s a whole new generation out there. Even in adolescence, image is everything. Boy, does time change everything…
Of all the characters in GG, it is definitely Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) who owns the limelight. She is a bitch wrapped in sugar and spice. She reminds me of Catherine in Cruel Intentions (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) but with a Snow White appeal. Admit it, she does look like Disney’s Snow White. Come on, imagine her with a big red bow on top of her head!
Serena van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively, doesn’t seem like the perennial object of gossip. She was drowned out by Blair after Episode 1. And after hooking up with Dan Humphrey, (Was he really gay in the novel?) Serena’s life is not controversial enough. Dan and Serena is becoming too boring for me. Though Dan is such the ideal guy, Im beginning to look forward to him coming out of the closet, so we can spice things up a little! Besides, this is primetime TV, not real life.
But what I particularly look forward to in each and every episode is the Rufus and Lily saga. They are so cute. Actually, it looks to me like they are the ones who act all teeny-bopper in this series. Funny that the old ones are reliving their first love, while the young bunch is caught up in their snotty, obscure lives. I just love the contrast! Thumbs up to Gossip Girl, and crossing all ten fingers for Rufus and Lily!
Cashmere Mafia on the other hand, is cashing in on the humongous success of Sex and the City. However, it fails to deliver the goods. Okay fine, there are sassy clothes, shoes, cars… But the characters simply don’t have what it takes. They are not as distinctive as the awesome foursome of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha. Lucy Liu is so beautiful, but sadly, she isnt able to pull off her outrageous outfits. It makes me wonder why. All the three, Zoe, Juliet and Caitlin, do not shine on their own. And that daily lunch (or dinner) rendezvous they have, is so not original. But okay, the strutting-in-fantastic-attires-around-Manhattan, I think I haven’t outgrown this part. I do hope though that Cashmere Mafia will pull off a big surprise soon. Otherwise, Im sensing an early goodbye for Mia, Zoe, Juliet and Caitlin.
In the final analysis, I vote Gossip Girl hot, Cashmere Mafia not. In this battle, teen snobs rule!!
