San Beda avenged last year’s loss to the DLSU Green Archers Thursday afternoon, with a convincing 87-75 win to advance to the finals of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Invitational at the Arena.
Sam Ekwe led the charge of the Red Lions with a stellar all around performance, posting 19 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks. Rogemar Menor, Borgie Hermida and Garvo Lanete all scored in double digits.
PJ Barua was firing triples the whole game through. The well-oiled Green Machine, led by Franz Pumaren kept the game close. That was until sophomore standout Garvo Lanete set off a barrage of points enabling Frankie Lim’s boys to pull away in the last three minutes of the game when the score was last at a deadlock. Since then, the Red Lions never looked back.
The Archers sorely missed the services of injured players, JV Casio, Bader Malabes, Simon Atkins and suspended rookie Joshua Webb. Pong Escobal was unable to suit up, still suffering from fever and tonsilitis.
I have to give credit to the Archers and Franz Pumaren. The DLSU basketball system is such a powerhouse. Regardless of the players who wear the jerseys, the time and tested system really works. As much as I don’t like Franz Pumaren, I hate to admit it, but he really is the best collegiate basketball coach of his generation.
With the win, San Beda faces the UE Red Warriors for the third time since their return from US training. It will be another interesting match up. For sure, James Martinez will be all fired up against his former Alma Mater. He has been having an impeccable off season. But then, so is the entire San Beda lineup.
Go San Beda Fight!
