NEW FILIPINO BOXING GREATS

Last weekend was a great one for sports. I was glued to the television, watching Filipino boxers trounce their opponents all afternoon. My favorite of all bouts yesterday was that of Brian Viloria, a Fil-Hawaiian, who rose from the ruins of his lost glory, back to the top of the world. He was up against a respectable champ in Ulises Solis.. The boxers were at each other since Round 1. Punch after punch, everyone was without a clue as to who will be the last man standing. And after a looooong exchange of power punches, Brian floored the champ in the 11th round in sensational fashion, in front of thousands of adoring Filipino fans at the Araneta Coliseum.

After Viloria lost his championship belt several years back, no one was sure if he could ever go back to his winning ways. He wrested the title in 2005, via a first round knockout. For a long while, I thought that his power punch has left him. I was happily wrong yesterday. He is back, SO BACK!!!

Congrats also to promising star Nonito Donaire who defended his title for the third time, and all our gallant Filipino pugs who emerged victorious yesterday.

One thing’s for sure, recession is unheard of in Filipino boxing. Keep the belts coming guys!!! Mabuhay kayong lahat!
