Teacher CaKe: Up Close and Personal

Russel and Kaye Bernales Ruiz is the husband and wife tandem behind Teacher CaKe, a specialist in custom made cakes and other baked goodies.  Teacher CaKe is a home-based baker, producing the cutest cakes you can ever imagine. Finished products are feasts for the senses. The biggest dilemma about these cakes is having the courage to break them up and eat them.

Minions cupcakes are among their most popular orders.

I completely understand if the one who ordered it, would place a “Hands Off” sign right beside this cake.

Interesting is the story behind the name, Teacher CaKe. Kaye, prior to jumping into the cupcake wars, was a full-time preschool teacher and after school tutor to grade school kids. During one of her sessions, she mentioned her fondness of baking to her tutee. The kid then suggested that she should put up a bakeshop and call it “Teacher CaKe”. A very smart play of words, if you ask me. Goes to show how good a tutor Kaye is!

But a baker cannot do it alone. Hubby Russel takes care of quality control. Majoring in Industrial Design at the UP College of Fine Arts surely comes into play at this stage of production. Nothing comes out of the Teacher CaKe confectionery without Russel’s stamp of approval.

With this formidable duo at the helm, there is no design that Teacher CaKe backs out from.  Looking at their online portfolio, you will find cakes of all shapes and sizes.

It is a joy to watch the Teacher CaKe team at work. The cake factory smells of cookie dough and cake batter all day, everyday. The kids would approach the work station, for a bit of leftover fondant. They burn the midnight oil, especially during weekends, when the bulk of their orders come in, as they mold and stencil their latest masterpiece.

Cakes beneath these works of art are of varied flavors — chocolate, lemon, banana, red velvet. Name it, they can make it. Mind you, Kaye has no formal training in cake making. But Kaye says, attending pastry school remains her long term goal. For now, it is her passion for baking and all things cute that drives her. Add to that an excellent palate that hits that balance in sweetness, texture and flavors, everytime.

Julia Child once said, “A party without a cake is just a meeting.” And no one argues with Julia Child…

So, for a party like no other, order your cake from Teacher CaKe. You won’t regret it.
